IN MEMORIAM:

We are deeply saddened by the news of Hilda Silverman's death from leukemia on May 6. She was widely admired for her dedication to justice and her conviction that a just peace can be achieved if we all do our part. She traveled to Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories with the Jewish American Medical Project and helped write a study guide on Israel and Palestine called "When the Rain Returns" published by the American Friends Service Committee. She was sending news of people who needed help as recently as February.

When Hilda wrote to ask for aid for a Palestinian dental student to continue his studies, when she wrote to ask for aid for the Gaza relief convoy, and when she wrote to ask for donations to Abir's Garden in memory of a Palestinian child killed by Israeli forces, it was impossible to refuse. Her dedication to human rights and her wonderful moral compass were inspiring to many. She will be deeply missed.

Our thoughts are with Hilda's family. A memorial service will be held on Sunday May 25, 2008, from 1-3pm, followed by a reception from 3-5.  It will be at Temple Beth-Shalom, 8 Tremont St, in Cambridge, MA.  Directions to the temple are at http://www.tremontstreetshul.org/tbsdirections.html.  In lieu of flowers, Hilda requested donations to JVP Boston or to the organization of your choosing.
